How to Choose the Right Heat Sealer - Measure the outside width of the widest pouch you plan to seal. The sealing bar must be longer than the pouch opening, with enough room to lay the material flat. Also consider the space available on your packing bench and how many pouches you'll seal each day. If you're unsure, send Polypouch the pouch dimensions before ordering.

How an Impulse Heat Sealer Works

An impulse heat sealer doesn't remain hot between seals. Pressing the arm activates the heating element for the time set on the dial, applying heat and pressure to the pouch. The element then switches off, and the seal starts to cool while the arm holds the material flat.

This heat and cool cycle helps the seal bond evenly. Keep the pouch opening clean and dry, test a low setting, then increase the timer in steps. Let the seal cool before checking it for gaps, wrinkles or scorching. Retest whenever you change the pouch material or thickness.

Every pouch Polypouch supplies (with the exception of spout pouches) can be heat sealed, including stand up pouches, flat bottom bags, foil pouches and sachets. The adjustable timer lets you match the sealing cycle to the material and thickness, helping you produce an even seal without scorching or distorting the pack.

Choose a sealing bar that's longer than the pouch opening. For a resealable pouch, position the seal above the tear notches and zip so the customer can open the header and continue using the resealable closure.

Heat Sealer FAQs

Can Every Polypouch Pouch Be Heat Sealed?

Every pouch Polypouch supplies can be heat sealed apart from spout pouches. The timer setting still depends on the material structure and thickness, so test an empty pouch at a low setting and increase the time in small steps until the seal is even.

Do Resealable Pouches Still Need Heat Sealing?

A zip lets the customer close the pouch after opening, but it doesn't prove the pack hasn't been opened. A heat seal above the tear notches creates a tamper evident first opening. The customer removes the header, then uses the zip afterwards.

Can an Impulse Heat Sealer Handle Continuous Production?

Impulse sealers suit manual packing, but the rated workload differs by model. If you're sealing throughout the day, check the machine's duty rating and allow for operator handling time. Higher volume lines may need foot operated or continuous equipment.

What Do Seal Length and Seal Width Mean?

Seal length is the maximum distance across the sealing bar. It must exceed the full width of the pouch opening. Seal width is the thickness of the sealed band. They're separate measurements, so check both against the machine specification.

When Should the Element and PTFE Cover Be Replaced?

The heating element and PTFE cover, the heat resistant strip over the element, wear during use. Replace them if the seal becomes patchy despite the correct setting, the cover is burnt or torn, or the element is bent or broken. Disconnect the machine and follow its instructions.
