Do Coffee Pouches Need a Degassing Valve?

Whole bean coffee usually needs a degassing valve because freshly roasted beans release carbon dioxide after roasting. The valve lets gas leave the pouch without letting oxygen back in.

Ground coffee doesn’t usually need a valve because most of the gas has already been released during grinding. The right option depends on the roast date, packing process and how quickly the coffee will be sold.

Which Pouch Type Works Best for Coffee?

Flat bottom bags work well for retail coffee because they stand square and give clear front, back and side panels for product information. Side gusset bags are often used for larger fill weights and more traditional coffee packs.

Stand up pouches are often used for smaller packs, samples, subscription orders and online sales. The right pouch type depends on the fill weight, closure and how the pack needs to stand once filled.

Which Material Should I Choose for Coffee Pouches?

Coffee usually needs a high barrier material. Barrier means the material helps protect the coffee from oxygen, moisture and light.

Foil and metallised materials are often chosen for coffee because they help protect flavour and aroma. Kraft can also work well when you want a paper finish, but the inner material still needs to suit the coffee and shelf life required.
